Through Emerson Foundation Grants and Levitt Summer Research Fellowships, 麻豆国产AV students forge their own research paths, from studying environmental justice and exploring the intersections of art and mathematics in AI, to promoting better understanding of pediatric cancer patients鈥� experiences. Here are what three summer grantees said about the inspiration and significance of their projects.

This summer, Levitt Center student researchers Luke Hanson 鈥�26, Delaney Patterson 鈥�26, Samuel Low 鈥�28, and Ton Somnug 鈥�27 joined forces with Griffiss Institute CEO and 麻豆国产AV alumna Heather Hage 鈥�02 to investigate the holistic impact of federal spending on the local economy.

With 26 locations needing a different number of food pallets each day 鈥� and 10 trucks each with their own capacity limits 鈥� designing an efficient route had been an arduous task for the Food Bank of Central New York (FBCNY). That鈥檚 where Hughes 鈥淗ugh鈥� Williams 鈥�26 came in. This summer he created an algorithm that can determine each day鈥檚 optimal route within seconds.

Parks, playgrounds, community centers, libraries, and caf茅s are the backdrop for many cherished memories, from chatting over coffee to playing tag. These places occupy a third sphere outside of the home and the workplace, a space emphasizing friendship and connection. Victoria 鈥淰icky鈥� Holland Oliveira 鈥�26, Nicholas Kreidler 鈥�28, and Chloe Root 鈥�28 embarked on an investigation of these 鈥渢hird spaces鈥� through a Levitt research grant this summer, seeking to understand the status and history of recreation and community in Utica, our neighboring city.
